As a Partner and Director of Corporate Services with Stratos Wealth Partners, Michael Mays offers a highly-dedicated, experienced and personalized advisory approach to manage and facilitate the unique financial needs of corporate executives and high-net-worth investors. Mr. Mays maintains an in-depth understanding of the complexities of equity-compensation and corporate stock-option plans for publicly-traded Fortune 500 companies.
Prior to joining Stratos Wealth Partners, Mr. Mays served as Vice President of Investments at Wachovia Securities. During his tenure at Wachovia, he served as a member of a team of industry experts and was one of a select group of Wachovia Securities’ Financial Advisors authorized to assist clients with their corporate stock-option plans on a national level. Mr. Mays also gained invaluable experience at UBS Financial Services, where he was an authorized advisor on the global stock-option/restricted-stock platform accounts for public companies, providing him with an intimate awareness of the corporate culture and comprehensive benefit plans offered on an executive level. He was one of UBS’ first financial advisors invited to join the CEFS Group, an exclusive national network of carefully-selected advisors allowed to prospect and service large stock-option platform accounts — based on achieving specific performance criteria. Mr. Mays also served as the Western Region Liaison to the Commercial, Office and Investment Real Estate Investment Group where he assisted clients in obtaining mezzanine, conduit and others forms of financing for high-value real estate.
Mr. Mays earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and MBA degree from National University, where he graduated magna cum laude. He also attended the Cannon School of Estate Planning, completing coursework on AXA Equitable and Pacific Life Advanced Estate Planning, Case Design, Strategies and Techniques, as well as SERP/SWAP Case Design, Strategies and Techniques. He has completed Level 1 coursework for the designated Certified Equity Professional (CEP) credential, is studying for the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) and CERTIFIED FINANICIAL PLANNERTM professional (CFP®) designations. Mr. Mays holds his Series 7, 31, 63 through LPL Financial, Series 66 through LPL and Stratos Wealth Partners, and California insurance license number 0C43047.
While he’s not in the office, Mr. Mays is highly active in his community. He has served as a guest speaker to discuss various exit strategies, estate planning techniques and insurance strategies at national and regional events comprised of corporate industry professionals. He attends many professional conventions including the National Association of Stock Plan Providers (NASPP), the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA), and the Certified Equity Professional (CEP). As a former U.S. Navy diver, he continues to support various charity events and fundraisers. He is a former board member and trustee of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is also a former Chairman of the Land Use Committee for the La Jolla Town Council, where he received a Commendation from the City of San Diego for his exemplary services.
Mr. Mays and his wife of 29 years, Deborah — an oncology nurse — have four sons, as well as an Alaskan Malamute, Maverick, and a cat, Olly. Mr. Mays and Deborah are active members of their church, and in their spare time enjoy theatre, surfing, playing golf, cooking, competitive shooting sports and traveling to new destinations.
